Guwahati Airport hit by rainstorm; flights diverted

Rain and storm disrupt Guwahati Airport operations; ceiling collapse forces flight diversions

A sudden storm accompanied by heavy rainfall disrupted operations at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati on Sunday evening. The adverse weather conditions led to a portion of the false ceiling collapsing, although no injuries were reported.

Impact of the storm

The heavy downpour and strong winds caused roof outlets in the airport to overflow, resulting in water accumulation inside the terminal building. Additionally, outside the terminal, a section of the false ceiling in the forecourt area collapsed due to the pressure from the water and wind. Despite the collapse, there were no injuries or significant damage reported, according to Utpal Baruah, the chief airport officer.

Baruah further explained that flight operations were affected due to the severe weather conditions. Moreover, an approach road to the facility was temporarily blocked for approximately 30 minutes due to trees being uprooted by the strong winds.

Response and resumption of operations

Videos circulating on social media depicted the intensity of the downpour and showed the portion of the ceiling collapsing. Airport staff were observed attempting to clear excess water from inside the building. In response to the situation, airport operations were suspended for approximately 45 minutes.

Baruah confirmed that six flights operated by Indigo, Air India, and Air India Express were diverted to Agartala and Kolkata due to the adverse weather conditions. However, operations have since resumed, and all six diverted flights have safely arrived in Guwahati.
